I don't usually rec stories, because I'm not very good at putting into words why I like a story (as opposed to why I dislike a story, which is easy). So, I'm just going to use most of what I commented to rec this one..
For 96K, this reads very quickly/flows very well. I love the complexity - the multiple types of magic and science (without going into paragraphs of pure explanation) and the layers and complexities to their relationship. The plot kept me guessing (which, honestly, rarely happens), and the tension between Severus and Harry was excellent, changing just enough as the situation altered to keep it from becoming stale/feeling drawn out.

Really, others said it better, especially perverse_idyll. If you haven't read (or started to read) this one yet, please do (heed the warnings, though, if you're the type to read warnings at all)

things I learned:
1) I still can't draw people, even cartoon ones.
2) my tendency towards the cliche is exacerbated by creating things in visual form.
3) my work will always be called 'sad and lovely,' regardless of medium'
4) my skills with teh photoshop, they are lacking
5) Don't color things in until you're absolutely sure you can get the effect you think you can with later editing.

That said, everyone should go see all the amazing art and stories people have created, from outside their comfort zone!

AHAHAHA.
I find this hysterical because I consider Stephen King's writing to be awful. Truly. I think some of his books make great movies, but his writing, in a line-by-line sense, is terrible. imho, of course, and I don't mean any offense to any of you who happen to like his books. I don't think rowling can really write either, line by line, but I still enjoyed the hp books for the characters.

At least Rowling and Meyer's books are clearly directed towards children / young adults -- the writing style is expected to be different from what you get in adult books. King doesn't have that excuse.

A while ago someone on my flist posted about watching Queer as Folk, and I thought I remembered who but apparantly didn't.

Anyway -- I own season two on DVD, and I'll probably never watch it again b/c it's the only season I own and I don't intend to buy others.
So, if one of you on my flist would like it, it's yours. The box shows wear, but the DVDs work perfectly. First come, first served, in case multiple people chime in.

Alas. Every one of the lovely people whose entries I had tagged for fic either got taken with the buy it now or had the bids quickly turn too rich for my wallet. My flist is truly full of talented people, but then, we knew that : )

While I only managed to finish my story for round 1, I have to say that the tarot fest is great fun. Of course the stories and artwork are incredible, but what makes it a blast to participate in is that the tarot prompts are so malleable. The cards -- their interpritations whether specific or vague, their symbology, can be used in such a variety of ways. Maybe I'm weird, but I like it because it makes me think. Of course, writing stories in general makes me think, but that usually comes after the prompt, not with/because of it. So I encourage those of you who haven't participated before to go have a look, and maybe give it a shot : )

I happend to have the chance to read this before it was posted, and made the author promise me I'd be notified the second it was up so that I could rec it. It's just that good. Fans of House, fans of classic literature, fans of funny -- all of you will get a kick out of this remix. It's funny, very much so, but also just a great example of intelligent writing. I don't even know how to put into words how great I think it is, which sucks because I can't do justice to it in this rec. All I can say is Read it. (and I strongly sugges reading it out loud, a la Robert Shaun Leonard's 'voice of puck' in Dead Poet's Society)

Drown your sorrows in Rum Cake

My boss made a wonderfull rum cake that she shared with us this week, and I got the receipe from her -- it's simple, and truly delicious (and I don't even like rum cake most of the time). It's sweet, and the rum flavor is there, but not the bitter/acrid alcohol taste you get with most alcohol laced cakes. Don't be put off by the fact that it uses a mix either, it's really good.

Rum Cake:
1 pkg. yellow cake mix
4 eggs
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 pkg instant vanilla pudding
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup rum

Rum glaze:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup water
1 cup sugar
2 T. rum

Combine all ingredients except pecans. Beat 4 minutes. Sprinkle pecans on bottom and sides of a well-greased and lightly floured 10 inch tube pan. Pour in batter. Bake 1 hour at 325 degrees or until toothpick comes out clean. While cake is baking, prepare rum glaze. Melt butter in sauce pan. Stir in sugar and water. Bring mixture to a boil and cook for 20 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in rum. Pour glaze over warm cake that has been pierced all over with a metal scewer.

Figured it's been a couple days, so here are the movies that didn't have their quotes quessed (poor, neglected movies)... I was so sure some of these would have been guessed right off the bat, too.

1. I was never more certain of how far away I was from my goal than when I was standing right beside it.

Gattaca. Lovely, Lovely movie, it's like watching a well-written short story. plus, slashable eye candy.

3. I spent 10 years learning which buttons to push, now I just have to look at myself and I come.

All Over the Guy. A m/m romantic comedy. cute, funny, dysfunctional.

8. You don't need your mouth to pee.

The Transporter. I only saw this movie for the first time a couple weeks ago, but come on, how can you not love a movie that involves a fight scene of men rolling around in oil and... well, I don't want to give it away.

9. A:Then how do you explain, your majesty, that many men remain faithful to only one wife?
B: They are sick

The King and I. This was one of those things I loved as a kid that should have tipped me off to what my future tastes would be.

There are still 8 movies left un-guessed on the movie quotes meme!
But that's not why I'm posting. I really like this particular meme because I think it's really interesting to see what movies people love. I admit that part of why I had a hard time thinking of 15 was because every time I started reading quotes for a movie, I'd get caught up in it and have the desperate urge to watch the movie again, right then.
I like a lot of movies, but I *love* very few.

So, I'm curious. I'd like to hear about at least one of the movies that is among your favorites (whether you did the meme or no) -- why do you love it? when did you first see it and who with? etc.
