Oh, what to do with all these gold medals... [17 Jun 2008|10:31pm]
*G* I don't think I really have to say it, because all the fic readers on my friends list already know, but team Dragon won Gold!! Huzzah!
That's three years running! Whoot! Congratulations to Team Dragon and to Team Phoenix, to the Games mods, artist, readers, and commentors, for making the games absolutely fabulous! It's been said many times already, but of course, everyone wins with the snarry_games (b/c, you know, there's more snarry, and that's really all it takes, right? : )

This is also my post to say that my games story has now been uploaded to my webpage:

Title Learning to Speak
Author:
ThreeSidedOrchid
Pairing: SS/HP
Rating: pg-13
Warnings: pre-slash, the bastardization of a beloved Dr. Seuss book for my own purposes.
Summary: "Most men spend their lives trying to either brush off the ashes of their youth, or rekindle them. The truth is that the only way to move forward is to accept them. "
Author’s Notes: Team Dragon, for the genre romance with the prompts 'Ashes of Youth,' and 'St. Mungo''s. Many, many thanks to the Mods, as always, for organizing the games and their infinite patience with my extension request(s). Also, this story would not exist in any intelligible form if it weren't for the beta work of Bironic, Jadzialove, Mimiheart and Klynie1. I'm fairly sure I owe a portion of my soul to each of them for saving this story, Thank you. And My thanks too, to the other members of team dragon, particularly Joanwilder, for all of their support and encouragement along the way.
Disclaimer: The Harry Potter universe and its characters belong to JKR and Warner Brothers, not me. I'm not making any money off of this - it is done soley for love of the characters and fun.

While I only managed to finish my story for round 1, I have to say that the tarot fest is great fun. Of course the stories and artwork are incredible, but what makes it a blast to participate in is that the tarot prompts are so malleable. The cards -- their interpritations whether specific or vague, their symbology, can be used in such a variety of ways. Maybe I'm weird, but I like it because it makes me think. Of course, writing stories in general makes me think, but that usually comes after the prompt, not with/because of it. So I encourage those of you who haven't participated before to go have a look, and maybe give it a shot : )

REC: A Princeton Odyssey [19 Apr 2008|05:27pm]
Waiting for the games to start?
Just want something to read?
Not really either of the above?

Everyone needs to go read
A Princeton Odyssey (Alexander Pope Is Turning In His Grave Remix) [House M.D.; House, Wilson, Cuddy

Right Now.

http://community.livejournal.com/remixredux08/47063.html

I happend to have the chance to read this before it was posted, and made the author promise me I'd be notified the second it was up so that I could rec it. It's just that good. Fans of House, fans of classic literature, fans of funny -- all of you will get a kick out of this remix. It's funny, very much so, but also just a great example of intelligent writing. I don't even know how to put into words how great I think it is, which sucks because I can't do justice to it in this rec. All I can say is Read it. (and I strongly sugges reading it out loud, a la Robert Shaun Leonard's 'voice of puck' in Dead Poet's Society)

Drown your sorrows in Rum Cake [16 Mar 2008|01:19pm]

My boss made a wonderfull rum cake that she shared with us this week, and I got the receipe from her -- it's simple, and truly delicious (and I don't even like rum cake most of the time). It's sweet, and the rum flavor is there, but not the bitter/acrid alcohol taste you get with most alcohol laced cakes. Don't be put off by the fact that it uses a mix either, it's really good.

Reveal: Movie Meme misses [26 Feb 2008|07:19pm]
Figured it's been a couple days, so here are the movies that didn't have their quotes quessed (poor, neglected movies)... I was so sure some of these would have been guessed right off the bat, too.

[24 Feb 2008|03:10pm]
There are still 8 movies left un-guessed on the movie quotes meme!
But that's not why I'm posting. I really like this particular meme because I think it's really interesting to see what movies people love. I admit that part of why I had a hard time thinking of 15 was because every time I started reading quotes for a movie, I'd get caught up in it and have the desperate urge to watch the movie again, right then.
I like a lot of movies, but I *love* very few.

So, I'm curious. I'd like to hear about at least one of the movies that is among your favorites (whether you did the meme or no) -- why do you love it? when did you first see it and who with? etc.

movie quotes meme [23 Feb 2008|10:06pm]
*shrugs* why not?
gakked from various folks on my f-list : )

Movie quotes meme
1. Pick 15 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Fill in the film title once it's guessed.
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions.

I admit, two of these are not what I would label favorites. One I don't even like all that much, but I'm drawn to it because it's just the saddest movie ever (extra points for guessing which one it is). But I needed two more and I ran out of favorites.

Fic Rec: To Stopper Death [07 Jan 2008|12:11am]
Thos of you who haven't read "To Stopper Death" by Chaos_rose, should.
It's Snape/Regulus, Lucius/Narcissa, and Lucius/Narcissa/Snape.

It's a amazing story, really a character portrait of all of them, with a focus on Lucius. He's so old world in this fic, and sympathetic without being good (Just the way I really like him). Here's a man who knows he has made mistakes, who must live as the lone survivor of his group in the aftermath of war -- knowing he has made mistakes and paying the price.
I also really enjoyed the way Regulus was portrayed in the story. I often avoid fics with Regulus in them because we don't know much about him in the books, and when people use him in fic I always feel I'm just reading an OMC disguised as a canon character. but not here - she manages to bring to life Regulus' plight, and all the interesting aspects of his life hinted at in the books, without really stepping beyond those boundaries (aside from the slash aspect).

and other good things, too. but you shouldn't read me rambling about it, you should go read it.

Guess that fic [02 Jan 2008|09:02am]

I am jumping on the bandwagon. As Alisanne challenged -- anyone who can correctly guess which fic is mine from Merry_Smutmas will get a drabble (most likely) or ficlet (somewhat likely) of the hp pairing of their choice.
I exclude those of you who were able to see my beta post of it over on LJ -- unless you want to promise me up, down, and sideways that you didn't see that post/didn't read it, I'll take your word for it.
I think it's glaringly obvious, but I'm the author so of course I would....

** almost forgot -- our host is back from the vet and the seems to be banged up but okay. Thank goodness.

Everyone needs to go read this now.
Yes, it's Argus/Snape, but it works, and even if the story line doesn't work for you, the way the whole thing is put together deserves reading.

Stolen from geniusartist , b/c I owe people a ton of emails too (not that this helps that any. that's the point), and because posting this here is better than ranting about work on lj.
P.s, if I owe you comments or an email, I'm sorry - I fail at life.

From your own stories, name the one:

1) you would show your mom if you didn't think she'd freak out.
(2) is most representative of you as a writer (however you choose to define that).
(3) is your best shot at "ventriloquizing" a voice or style that you don't normally use.
(4) contains characterization you're proudest of.
(5) has the cleverest premise (in your opinion) or contains the cleverest ideas.
(6) feels the most emotionally genuine to you (however you choose to define that).
(7) you'd give to an editor as a writing sample (pretend that porn isn't an issue).
(8) you would actually reread for pleasure.
(9) contains your best sex writing.
(10) you really want somebody to illustrate.
(11) has the best title.
(12) you wish more people had read.

I don't want to go home, so I'm at the cafe, w/ nothing to read, writing going nowhere, and not really anything to say.
So, have a meme:

stolen from svmadelyn on lj,
1. Go to http://www.careercruising.com.
2. Put in Username: nycareers, Password: landmark.
3. Take their "Career Matchmaker" questions.
4. Post the top ten results.

1. Artist
2. Furniture Finisher
3. Locksmith
4. Miner (underground)
5. Mechanical Engineering Tech
6. Office Machine Repairer
7. Plasterer
8. Civil Engineering Tech
9. Taxidermist
10. Camera Operator

I have absolutely *no* idea how they came up w/ locksmith or miner, let alone taxidermist (esp. since I said I *didn't* want to work w/ animals).
I've dutifully listed the first ten, and not put in the ones lower down on the list that I think sound more interesting, like ship's crew, crane operator, costume designer and magician.
And, I confess that if I were an office Machine repairer the temptation to make myself a costume (w/ cape) and declare myself captain copier might just be too great.

they didn't include window washer, which recently struck me as a career particularly suited to my likes -- esp. the being up high part.
